No matter how much praise the Mac OS receives, there is one thing that Apple cannot change - Mac's are operated by people, and people make mistakes. However, PhotoRec Data Recovery (and companion program TestDisk) is a free tool that performs effective data recovery on a Mac. It certainly doesn't have a sexy look and seems like it would be more at home on an Apple II, but don't let that put you off. It's simple operation allows you to recover lost or deleted data files, photos, music, office documents or whatever type of file you need to undelete.
The nice aspect to PhotoRec Data Recovery is that it doesn't require installation, so it can be run from a CD, USB flash drive or external hard drive. According to the authors, 'it also ignores the file system and recovers the underlying data, so it will still work even if your media's file system has been severely damaged or reformatted.'
